A
small earthquake rippled across the ocean floor off of the Palos Verdes Peninsula
early today, but its magnitude was so slight that it was unlikely to cause any
damage.
The
quake, centered about four miles northwest of Palos Verdes Point, had a magnitude
of 2.7, according to a preliminary report by the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency
called it a "microearthquake."
The
quake happened at about 6:20 a.m. Hundreds of people, from Long Beach to Santa
Monica, reported feeling it, according to the Geological Survey; most described
it as a light shake, and none reported any damage.
No
other quakes have been recorded in the past several days in the Los Angeles area,
according to the geological agency.
