Lampung Jolted By 6.0-magnitude Earthquake
BANDARLAMPUNG
(Lampung Province) June 29 (Bernama) -- An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter
scale jolted Krui waters, West Lampung (Lambar) District, in the wee hours of
Friday, ANTARA reported.
The
6.0-magnitude earthquake occurred at around 5.37 am local time, Bambang Nova Setyanto,
coordinator of the Lampung Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) was quoted
as saying here on Friday.
The
epicenter of the earthquake was located at 6.00 degrees southern latitude and
103.73 degrees eastern longitude, around 99 km southwest of Krui, West Lampung,
at a depth of 50 km below the sea level.
"However,
the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami," he said.
According
to him, the earthquake would be felt by residents of Krui, Bandarlampung, Kota
Agung (Tanggamus), and Kalianda (South Lampung), at between the first and second
levels of Mercalli Modified Intensity (MMI).
The
meteorology agency earlier also recorded an earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter
Scale on Friday at 00.30 am in Aceh, northern Sumatra.
The
epicenter of the Aceh's earthquake was located at 3.92 degrees northern latitude
and 95.76 degrees eastern longitude, around 36 km northwest of Meulaboh, Aceh
Province, at a depth of 33 km below the sea level.
Indonesia
sits on the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, and experiences frequent
earthquakes - as well as tsunamis triggered by underwater earthquakes.
