Want
to scare visitors on Latta ghost walk?
50
people needed to act out scary tales from Civil War era
ERICA BESHEARS
If
you like to deliver Halloween chills with a dose of history, Historic Latta Plantation
has the spooky opportunity for you.
The
living history plantation needs about 50 volunteers for its fourth Civil War Ghost
Walk Oct. 26-27. The volunteers will act out scary scenes from the Civil War era
for visitors touring the plantation those nights.
Latta
needs male and female volunteers 12 and up who can commit to being at Latta from
6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 26-27, and they need to sign up by Oct. 10. There may be a training
session.
It's
a plus if the volunteers can supply their own costumes, but not necessary, said
Karen Thompson, education and operations specialist at Latta. (For men, that means
a Civil War soldier or 19th-century farmer costume. There's a bit more flexibility
in what the women can wear, Thompson said.)
For
those who want to be haunted instead of doing the haunting, the ghost walk will
be open for $7 for those over 5, free for 5 and under. Visitors can tour the plantation
and listen to guides tell spooky stories about life at Latta.
Latta
Plantation, on Sample Road off Beatties Ford, was a successful cotton plantation
in the 1800s and is now owned by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation.
It
functions as a living history farm, and visitors can see costumed interpreters
and do activities to experience life as a planter, farmer or slave in the 19th
century Carolina backcountry.
