hour is getting a youthful feel in Owen Sound.
The
city has been approached by Laura Campbell, a student member of West Hill Secondary
School's Envirothon team to hold a unique earth hour event at the end of the month. Campbell
has requested using the City Hall parking lot and Farmers Market outdoor area
for a special youth-oriented gathering. There
will be candles, music and information about how to make changes to reduce emissions. City
council feels a youth focus for earth hour is appropriate, since climate change
will have the greatest impact on the coming generations. Earth
Hour is on March 29th -- everyone is encouraged to turn off their lights for one
hour between 8 and 9 PM to help reduce energy demands. Mayor
Ruth Lovell says she is positive the people of Owen Sound and the business community
will get on board with this effort to take action on climate change. The
Earth Hour initiaitve is the brain child of the World Wildlife Fund. The
movement started last year in Sydney Australia, where 2.3 million people and 21
hundred businesses turned out the lights for one hour. |
