Platinum
throws light on Mackay's night-sky mystery
10.01.2008
IT
is not a bird and, according to Mackay Port Authority, it is not a plane either.
The
big bright light that has had Mackay in a spin is just a very successful marketing
gimmick by city heart nightclub Platinum Lounge.
"That's
our light," said Platinum Lounge's general manager Murray Pearson. The intention
is that when the light is on it's open.
"It's
going really well to be honest."
Mr
Pearson said the light had been seen from the harbour, and had even been spotted
from Erakala.
The
Daily Mercury has received SMS text messages and calls about a mysterious bright
light reflecting from the clouds but Mr Pearson was quick to say it was nothing
too exciting.
"There are no UFOs here, mate; mind you, there are
some weird ones around," he said.
"We haven't brought any planes
down yet, but that's OK.
"We
checked with the aviation mob we're out of the direct path of planes,"
he said.
Mackay
Port Authority business development manager Gary Richards said the spotlight was
above board.
"They
contacted CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) and we contacted the tower on
their behalf to let them know the information that we received."
Mr
Richards said the light had not encouraged him to visit the city nightspot.
"From
where I live, I couldn't pick where it was. It didn't have a positive impact,"
he said.
Mr
Pearson said the light was "just a talking piece".
"We've
actually got two others to put a big "P" onto buildings."
He
said the aim was to put a stencil on the light, and project their logo into the
sky.
Mr
Richards said the spotlight atop the air traffic control tower was not for attracting
customers to the airport.
