Good Feng Shui in the kitchen ensures health and harmony for all the inhabitants. Always place your kitchen in the negative sectors as a thumb rule as it helps create good luck for you. This is due to the presence of the strong Fire mouth. Your cooking range microwave, oven, rice cookers all fall in the category of the Fire mouth. The kitchen is a very Yang space, with lots of fire energy from the stove and electrical appliances.

Wrong placement of the fire mouth can actually trigger a lot of arguments and gossips, and mishaps are all possible as your home is susceptible to a variety of problems. In terms of physical health, this is most likely to affect the stomach and digestive system or the heart (especially high blood pressure).

Urban designs and space restrictions often create layouts where the kitchen and the bathroom share a wall. Although this is not an ideal arrangement in Feng Shui terms, it’s also not always a major problem. The kitchen sink and the bathroom sink back-to-back on either side of the wall, for example, is okay. However, if the bathroom toilet, tub, sink, or shower is directly on the other side of a shared wall from your stove, this is considered a threat to the health of the family and may also lead to disagreements and conflict among family members.

The kitchen should not be the first room you want to see when you enter your house.

Always use bright Yang colours like oranges, greens, browns and bright yellows as this is the Yang sector of your home.

Tips for designing your kitchen

• Fire and water should not be aligned side by side or directly opposite the each other. Separate the two with a partition made of wood if you don’t have a choice.
• The kitchen should not be located below a toilet or adjacent to it.
• It is inauspicious to have kitchen in the centre of a home.
• The stove should not face the front door under any circumstances.
• The stove should not face the toilet door
• The stove should not be placed under the overhead beams.

Try your best to keep your kitchen clean and clutter free. Chipped glass or crockery will only bring negative energy so discard them immediately.
Fit kitchen cupboards and shelves with rounded corners to avoid cutting Chi into your body while preparing and cooking your food.
