Aykroyd encourages students to write

HALIFAX (CP) — They may not have been his typical fans, but it’s hard to imagine a more enthusiastic audience than the 200 elementary school kids who got a visit from legendary soul man Dan Aykroyd.

The writer, actor and musician boomed into the gym at Fairview Heights Elementary School in Halifax to squeals of delight from the students who had been munching on pepperoni and cheese pizzas and watching Aykroyd’s 1984 hit movie, Ghost Busters.

“My time is past. I’m old, I’ve done my thing,” he told them. “But how do you think movies like that get written? Because I had an idea in my head as a young man. I put it out there ... It became a reality.”

“What you dream is what you can become. You have that power.”

The Ottawa-born comedian, actor and musician has been in Halifax this week to play some blues, raise money for charity and launch a line of Patron tequilas at Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation outlets.

It was only late Thursday that Shirley Locke of the investment firm Wellington West was able to arrange for Aykroyd to visit the Halifax school as part of its “Pizza and Piano” program, where celebrities come to the school at lunch time and make music with the kids.

But the school’s never seen such a celebrity as Aykroyd, said principal David DeVan, himself a fan since the early days of the Blues Brothers.

“This will be the talk at supper tonight. They’ll be talking about it all weekend,” he predicted, adding that
