Heavy lifting not alien to Coral Castle

Dearly Beloved and I recently visited Coral Castle in Homestead, south of Miami. We had planned that particular trip a number of times, but always had to abort it at the last moment due to other pressing concerns. But now we have, at long last, actually visited the site. I got some pretty nice stereo photos of the area, ones I'm going to enjoy for years to come.

I spoke of that locale here in this column several times, and now that I've finally seen it with my own eyes, I have to say it IS truly impressive. Slabs of coral rock were quarried into gigantic sizes and erected by one man, unassisted & a little guy about 100 pounds in size. It's a truly impressive achievement.

Lots of stuff you read about Coral Castle suggests Ed Leedskalnin used anti-gravity or some such arcane force to assist him in his endeavors, but after visiting the site, and learning that it took him 28 years to accomplish his vision, I have to conclude he wasn't "floating" stones in the air. Had he been able to do that, I don't imagine it would have taken him nearly as long to complete his mission.

Looks to me like he did it the old-fashioned way, just plain old hard work, and using his extensive knowledge of levers, fulcrums, pulleys and the like.

Too bad - I kinda liked the anti-gravity idea myself!
